Playful family portraits in Medford, Oregon at sunset
This sweet family is always so much fun to photograph! Their kids are silly, energetic, full of personality, and, thankfully, actually love being in front of the camera. That makes my job ridiculously fun.
And can we talk about their outfits?!
They are SO well dressed. Every single time. Their family sessions always have the best mix of colors, textures, and style, and I love how much personality comes through in the way they dress. They somehow manage to look polished and coordinated without feeling overly matchy-matchy.
For this session, we got to do something especially meaningful.
Their family recently purchased a piece of property where they’ll be building their future home, so we headed over to the empty lot at sunset to capture some of their family photos there. I absolutely love this idea. There isn’t a house yet. There aren’t years of memories built into the space yet. But someday, when they’re standing in their finished home looking back at these photos, they’ll remember this exact chapter, the beginning.
That is really special.
The sunset light was beautiful, and the open property gave the kids plenty of room to run around and be silly. With three kids, there was naturally plenty of energy happening at once, but that’s exactly what makes their photos feel so alive.
They have the kind of family dynamic that makes me want to keep clicking the shutter. Big smiles, goofy moments, little interactions, and lots of personality.
And their daughter?
She loves to pose.
Which I am obviously not going to complain about. She knows how to work the camera, and I have a feeling we could have spent the entire evening creating portraits of her if we’d let her.
We also spent some time photographing them at home, which gave us a completely different feel. Their cozy living spaces, backyard, and front steps became part of the story too.
I love incorporating a family’s home into their session because it’s where so much of life actually happens. It’s where the kids grow up, where the everyday chaos happens, where everyone gathers, and where all those little memories are being made.
So we got the best of both worlds:
Their home as it is right now + the property where their future home will be.
I think that’s such a beautiful way to document a family during a season of change.
These kids won’t always be this age. Their personalities will keep evolving, their family will keep growing, and that empty lot will eventually become the backdrop for a whole new chapter.
But they’ll always have these photos to remember what life looked like right here, right now.
Thank you guys for another incredibly fun session! I absolutely love getting to photograph your stylish, silly, energetic crew, and I’m already excited to see what that empty lot looks like when it becomes home.
What a special season to document. 🤎✨
