I’ve realized lately just how much I love photographing people doing the things they love. There’s something really special about having rad photos of yourself immersed in a passion. Not just a nice portrait where you’re smiling at the camera, but photos that capture you actually doing the thing that lights you up. Such as surfing.. in Crescent City, Oregon.

And honestly, getting to witness someone’s enthusiasm for something they love is pretty priceless. That was definitely the case with Chris.

We headed to Crescent City on the Northern California coast for some surfing photos, and it was so much fun watching him gear up and get ready to hit the waves. You could see the excitement on his face before he even got in the water, and I absolutely loved getting to document that energy.

It wasn’t exactly a day with massive, epic waves, but that didn’t stop Chris one bit. He was out there having a blast anyway, doing what he loves and making the most of the conditions.

And that is exactly what I wanted to capture.

His bright yellow surfboard was also pretty much made for photos. It popped beautifully against the moody coastal landscape and ocean, giving the images such a fun punch of color.

There is something really cool about photographing an activity from an outside perspective, too. As a photographer, I get to see all these little details, the anticipation before getting in the water, the concentration, the movement, the excitement when you catch a wave, and that huge grin afterward. Those are the moments that tell the story.

And yes…

Can we take a moment of silence for those abs?

I mean, GEEZ.

Chris, you made my job pretty easy. I loved getting to photograph you doing something you’re clearly passionate about, and I hope these photos always remind you of how much fun you were having out there.
